SECURITY at Melbourne Airport has come under fire after Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland was caught carrying ammunition in his carry-on luggage at Canberra Airport.

Security expert and former ASIO agent Mike Roach said Qantas, which was responsible for security at the domestic terminal Mr Overland passed through on Thursday, had some serious questions to answer. "It just shows the security checking is not thorough," he said.

Mr Roach said the public had every right to feel unsafe on Australian flights.

Qantas spokeswoman Sophia Connelly confirmed Mr Overland passed through a security point in Melbourne with the ammunition.

"It's a great concern to us, and we're taking the incident very seriously," she said.

"We've commenced an immediate investigation."

Darren, a former airport security officer, said most officers working the X-ray equipment would not recognise a magazine of bullets.

He said security staff were grossly under-trained.

  1. a couple of years ago I travelled to and from Sydney myself, I was carrying a 44 magnum shell in my "bum bag" which was scanned at the airport security both in Perth and in Sydney but not found, I had been carrying this bullet in my bum bag but had completely forgotten about it, only realising that I had it with me a couple of days after I got back ...
