"The fact that the man died in Adelaide, the nearest capital city to Woomera, a top-secret missile launching and intelligence gathering site,[61] heightened this speculation. It was also recalled that one possible location from which the man might have travelled to Adelaide was Port Augusta,[10] a town relatively close to Woomera.
Additionally, in April 1947 the United States Army's Signal Intelligence Service, as part of Operation Venona, discovered that there had been top secret material leaked from Australia's Department of External Affairs to the Soviet embassy in Canberra.[62] This led to a 1948 U.S. ban on the transfer of all classified information to Australia.[62]
As a response, the Australian government announced that it would establish a national secret security service (which became the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO)).[63]"
